Background & Aims
Marital relationships are one of the most important aspects of individual life, significantly impacting mental health and overall quality of life. Sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment are key factors in the stability and health of these relationships. However, daily stressors, conflicts between partners, and psychological problems can reduce the quality of these dimensions. In recent years, innovative psychotherapeutic approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy(ACT)-based mindfulness training, have gained special attention. This approach emphasizes acceptance of internal experiences and commitment to life values, helping individuals to cope with psychological and relational challenges in a healthier way. Recent studies have shown that ACT training can improve sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment, but further research is needed to confirm the practical application and effectiveness of these interventions in diverse population groups.
Today, improving the quality of marital life and sexual satisfaction are among the important goals of psychological interventions. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy(ACT) mindfulness training, as a new approach, has received special attention in improving mental health and interpersonal relationships. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effectiveness of mindfulness training based on acceptance and commitment on sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment.
Method: The present study is a quasi-experimental study with two experimental and control groups. This research is conducted at three levels: pretest, posttest, and follow-up. The subjects will be followed up 2 months after the posttest. The method of collecting data is library and the collection tool is receipt taking. The statistical population of the study is 30 people available from the counseling centers of Arak city in two control and experimental groups. The data collection tool is the use of the Locke and Wallace(1959) and Larson(1998) marital adjustment questionnaires, and the mindfulness therapy protocol in 8 sessions. Data analysis was performed using Spss26 software.
Results
The findings showed that mindfulness training had a significant effect on couples' sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment. The results showed that mindfulness training had progressed in the post-test and follow-up periods, which indicates that mindfulness training had an effect on sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment. The results show that marital adjustment improved in the post-test compared to the pre-test and in the follow-up compared to the previous two stages. The levels of significance and eta squared indicate the stated claim. As is clear, the subjects improved by about 18% in the post-test and this number increased to 23.5% in the follow-up.
Conclusion: Therefore, mindfulness training based on acceptance and commitment is considered a practical and efficient method. The results of the study show that mindfulness training based on acceptance and commitment can effectively improve sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment in couples. This approach, by increasing momentary awareness and accepting internal experiences, paves the way for reducing marital conflicts and improving the quality of relationships. As stated, sexual satisfaction is the pleasant feeling of couples from their sexual relations. Feelings can change for many reasons, such as lack of sexual and verbal skills between couples, and cause sexual dissatisfaction in couples. Sexual satisfaction is related to the love and affection of couples and their intimate relationships. Many of the problems of couples today are related to sexual dissatisfaction, and many divorces, especially emotional divorces, are caused by this factor. If there are romantic and intimate relationships between couples, it can be expected that they will be sufficiently satisfied with their sexual relations. Therefore, to improve couples' sexual satisfaction, mindfulness training based on acceptance and commitment can be used. Mindfulness can direct couples' thoughts and mindsets in a positive direction and make them aware of their own mindset. Many sexual dissatisfactions are caused by mental and psychological issues that can cause serious damage to couples' sexual relationships. Therefore, through mindfulness, the amount of mental and psychological stress and anxiety can be reduced and desirable sexual satisfaction can be expected from couples.
