Background & Aims: The Islamic Azad Universities of Mazandaran Province, with their diverse academic disciplines, wide geographic coverage, and significant population of students and faculty members, possess a high capacity for innovation development. However, experience shows that many innovative projects within these universities are halted at early stages or fail to reach operational phases due to managerial, structural, cultural, and psychological challenges. Among the most important of these challenges are the lack of proper identification of motivational and psychological factors influencing innovation, the weakness in creating a psychologically safe environment for expressing new ideas, the lack of alignment between management policies and the psychological needs of innovators, and the absence of support systems for managing failures and risks associated with innovation. These factors prevent the potential innovation capacity of the universities in Mazandaran Province from being realized and cause opportunities for scientific and technological growth and development to be lost. To address these challenges, it is essential to identify the dimensions of innovation management from a psychological perspective so that, relying on scientific findings and localizing them within the cultural and structural context of the Islamic Azad Universities of Mazandaran Province, development and management programs for innovation can be designed and implemented with a human-centered and psychological approach. Such an approach, while enhancing the psychological capital of university members, fosters intrinsic motivation and commitment to innovative processes, increases tolerance for failure and positive risk-taking, and ultimately facilitates the innovation process. Moreover, identifying the psychological dimensions of innovation management can lead to the design of human resource policies aligned with strengthening innovation, the development of training courses to enhance soft skills related to innovation, the establishment of reward systems compatible with psychological motivations, the creation of an organizational culture that supports innovation, and the formation of collaborative networks among faculty members and students. These measures, combined with structured innovation management, can transform the Islamic Azad Universities of Mazandaran Province into entrepreneurial, innovative, and socially responsive institutions. Given the importance and necessity of this subject, the present study was conducted with the aim of identifying the dimensions of innovation management from a psychological perspective in the Islamic Azad Universities of Mazandaran Province. By scientifically explaining the dimensions and indicators of this topic, the study seeks to lay the groundwork for developing localized models to enhance innovation in the province’s universities. The outcomes of this research can assist university managers, policymakers, and planners in better understanding the psychological components related to innovation management, adopting effective approaches to achieve scientific, research, and entrepreneurial goals, and leveraging the capacities of university members for societal development and problem-solving.
Methods: This applied research was conducted using a mixed-methods approach with an exploratory design. In the qualitative phase, the Delphi method was employed with 10 selected faculty members. In the quantitative phase, 308 faculty members from the Islamic Azad Universities of Mazandaran Province were surveyed using stratified random sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and a 66-item questionnaire designed by the researcher. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis using SPSS version 26, with a significance level set at 0.05.
Results: The findings indicated that psychological factors such as the style of educational management, human resource development, organizational incentives, and organizational culture play a key role in strengthening innovation management. Organizational absorption capacity and organizational structure were also identified as important factors facilitating the innovation process. Furthermore, teaching methods based on psychological approaches and the availability of resources and facilities were found to foster increased creativity and innovation within universities.
Conclusion: This study demonstrated that emphasizing a psychological approach in each dimension of innovation management at the Islamic Azad Universities of Mazandaran Province highlights the importance of human factors, attitudes, motivations, and psychological interactions in the innovation process. The results suggest that the success of innovation management depends not only on providing resources and physical structures but also on addressing the psychological aspects of university staff and members, creating supportive and motivational environments, and improving teaching and training methods through psychological approaches, which can significantly enhance innovation effectiveness.
