Introduction: Cardiac complications resulting by increased apoptosis are one of the most important diabetes-induced complications that are affected by different doses of high intensity interval training (HIIT). Hence, the aim of the present study was to compare two methods of HIIT on glucose levels, genes expression of pro-apoptotic Bax and anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 in cardiomyocytes of diabetic rats.
Methods: In this experimental study, 24 male Wistar rats (aged 8 weeks, weighted 321± 18 g) were induced diabetes, then were randomly divided into 4 group including healthy control groups, diabetic control, HIIT1:1, HIIT2:1. Afterwards, interventional groups performed HIIT, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks.
Results: Diabetes resulted in significantly increasing in glucose levels and Bax and decreasing Bcl-2 in the diabetic control group, HIIT1:1 and HIIT2:1 compared to the healthy control group (p<0.05). HIIT2:1 significantly reduced, glucose levels, Bax and increased Bcl-2 in cardiomyocytes compared to healthy control and diabetic control groups. HIIT1:1 just decreased glucose levels significantly in comparison with DC (p<0.05). More important, cardiac Bax gene expression in HIIT2:1 group was significantly greater than HIIT1:1 group.
Conclusion: Diabetes induces cardiomyopathy via increased Bax expression- and decreased Bcl-2 expression-induced apoptosis in cardiomyocytes. HIIT2:1 minimizes these effects. In addition, the prescribed dose of HIIT is an important and effective in mechanistic changes.
