It is a rare neoplasm of childhood, accounting for less than 5% of all cases. In 1994 a 29 months old boy was admitted to the Mofid Hospital with complaints of fever, dyspnea and respiratory distress. After performing all the necessary clinical and labratory tests a large mass in the upper posterior mediastinum was detected. The tumor was resected. Pathological examination of the tumor showed a malignant neoplastic tissue composed of round atypical cells with hyperchromatic and vesicular nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm similar to rhabdomyoblasts pseudorossettes and areas of necrosis and hemorrhage were evident. On immunohistochemical study, the tumor cells were positive for S100 protein, NSE, vim entin, keratin and EMA. Diagnosis of MPNST was confirmed by clinical manifestation, pathologic findings and immunohistochemical studies.}, Keywords = {1) Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor 2) Childhood neural malignant tumor 3) Neurofibromatosis}, volume = {4}, Number = {1}, pages = {11-16}, publisher = {Iran University of Medical Sciences}, url = {http://rjms.iums.ac.ir/article-1-1807-en.html}, eprint = {http://rjms.iums.ac.ir/article-1-1807-en.pdf}, journal = {Razi Journal of Medical Sciences}, issn = {2228-7043}, eissn = {2228-7051}, year = {1997} } @article{ author = {Sadjadi, S.J. and SoltaniArabshahi, S.K. and Mozafari, N.A. and Asadi, K.}, title = {FREQUENCY DETERMINATION OF STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS NASOPHARYNGEAL CARRIERS AMONG HEALTH PERSONNEL IN THREE TEACHING HOSPITAL}, abstract ={In order to determining the percentage of staph. carriers which is important in spreading to other patients and thus to the community. This descriptive and cross sectional studv was performed in 3 teaching hospitals of Iran University of Medical Sciences and Health Services. 380 health workers were chosen, separate nasal and pharyngeal swabs were taken from each person and transferred to mannitol - salt - agar media and coagulase test was performed in those samples who had I positive culture. The results obtained from 380 samples show that 189 (50%) nasal, 81 (21%) pharyngeal and 64(17%) nasopharyngeal samples were staph aureus carriers. Among the three hospitals, Branks first in term of the highest number of carriers with 59% nasal and 30% pharyngeal, hospital A and Cranked second and third with 43% - 18% and 44% - 11% rates, respectively. In hospital A the highest number of nasal carriers were in the surgical ward (67%) and the highest number of pharyngeal carriers in internal medicine (30%). In hospital B the highest number of nasal carriers in CCU (86%) and pharyngeal carriers in ophthalmology department (60%). The average nasal carrier rate seems to be approximately 50% which is different from American reports Hospital A (43%) and C (44%) shows no difference from American figures, Hospital B with the highest carrier rate requires treatment, improved health care and more restricted infection prevention measurements.}, Keywords = {1) Staphylococcus aureus 2) Nasal carriage 3) Pharyngeal carriage}, volume = {4}, Number = {1}, pages = {17-22}, publisher = {Iran University of Medical Sciences}, url = {http://rjms.iums.ac.ir/article-1-1809-en.html}, eprint = {http://rjms.iums.ac.ir/article-1-1809-en.pdf}, journal = {Razi Journal of Medical Sciences}, issn = {2228-7043}, eissn = {2228-7051}, year = {1997} } @article{ author = {Sheikhi, A.K.}, title = {NATURAL KILLER CELL ACTIVITY ASSAY IN CANCEROUS PATIENTS IN COMPARISON WITH NORMAL PERSONS}, abstract ={Among immune system components natural killer (NK) cells are the first line of defence against tumor cells. The decreasing activity of these cells can be associated with carcinogenesis, in situ tumor growth and metastasis of different cancers, viral infections, immunodeficiency syndroms and autoimmune diseases. In this study natural killer activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (Effector cells) against K562 cell line (Target cells) in clinically and histologically proved cases of nine esophageal, seven breast, six rectum, two melanoma and two stomach cancer patients was assessed concurrently with 31 sex and age mathed controls. The patients did not have any treatment (chemotherapy, rad iotherapy, surgery and else) previously. Measurement of N.K activity was carried out using two effector: target (E:T) proportions of 50:1 and 10:1 prior to coculture with effector cells, the target cells were labelled with 51Cr, and after coculturing the amount of free 51Cr was measured using a gamma counter. The percentage of specific lysis (or NK activity) in different cancerous patients (35 ±2%) was statistically (student t test) lower than the value obtain in normal persons (69±1.5%) , (p<0.0001). Fifty health subjects without an history of right and left upper extremity pathological conditions were divided into two groups: laser (n=30) and placebo (n=20) groups. Six 1 em blocks along 12cm segment of the subject's right and left superficial radial nerve recieved 70 second application of either the infared laser or a placebo. Antidromic sensory nerve conduction study was performed on the superficial nerve of each subject's right and left forearm. The infrared laser radiation was applied at the fixed intensity for six 1 em segments. Latency, amplitude, duration and temperature measurements were recorded before and after the test by EMG and thermometer. We assessed differences between pre test and post test latency, amplitude, duration and temperatuee with t-test for correlated and independent samples. The laser group showed a statistically significant increase in latency that corresponded to a decrease in sensory nerve conduction velocity. This finding provides the information about the mechanism of the reported pain relieving effects of the infrared laser. This study was designed to evaluate the abinty of metoclopramide to control nausea and vomiting in a group of patients with lung non small cell carcinoma on CAP (Cyclophosphamide, Adriamycin and Cisplatin) chemotherapy protocol. 42 patients, 30 male and 12 female, ages from 40-70 years were entered in this study during a one year period, from Oct. 1994 to Nov. 1995. All patients were free from digestive, hepatic and C.N.S diseases and they were not on any tranquilizers during chemotherapy. Metoclopramide was given 10-15 minutes before and after chemotherapy as I. V bolus injection, 0.3-0.4mg/kg and continued 10 mg/q 8 hours P. O. after cessation of chemotherapy for 24-48 hours. Every single episode of nausea and vomiting during this priod were recorded and later analysed. Result: Metoclopramide was able to control nausea and vomiting in 95% of patients recieving C.A.P chemotherapy. Mark, Smyth and "Italian group for antiemetic research" in 1987, 1991 and 1995 respectively, noted 83%, 77% and 92% control of nausea and vomiting in their patients with two antiemetic agents.
