Background& aims: Transgender people have many social and psychological problems. The purpose of this research review is to investigate the risk of suicide (suicide thoughts, suicide attempts and suicide prevalence) and self-harming behavior among these transgender people.
Materials and methods: in order to access studies related to the purpose of the study, in internal databases; SID, Magiran, IranMedex and Irandoc and international databases; Google-Scholar, Medline, PubMed, Elsevier, ProQuest, Springer were searched using the keywords Mesh (suicide, self-harm with gender dysphoria), from 2012-2022. Finally, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 15 studies were finally selected.
Results: From the review of the research literature, it was found that the prevalence of self-harming and suicidal behavior is higher among transgender people than people of the same gender. Also, there are gender differences in the prevalence of self-harming and suicidal behavior in trans people. Male transgender people are at a higher risk of self-harm and suicide. Similarly, the rate of suicide among young transgender people is higher than that of middle-aged people.
Conclusion: It can be said that transgender people are at higher risk for self-harming and suicidal behavior compared to people of the same gender. Therefore, by knowing the risk factors and taking preventive measures in this field, the suicide rate can be reduced in these people.
