زمینه و هدف: کمبود ویتامین D یک اختلال شایع در سالمندان می‌باشد که کمبود آن ممکن است با اختلال شناختی ارتباط داشته باشد. هدف از انجام مطالعه بررسی ارتباط 25 OH ویتامین D و اختلالات شناختی در سالمندان می‌باشد.
روش کار: در این مطالعه موردی- شاهدی 35 فرد مبتلا به اختلال شناختی با 35 فرد که اختلال شناختی نداشتند بررسی شدند. سطح سرمی 25 OH ویتامین D در هر دو گروه به‌صورت ناشتا به روش  ELISAاندازه‌گیری شد. سطح ویتامین D کمتر ازng/ml 30 ناکافی و بیشتر از آن کافی در نظر گرفته شد. داد‌ها با استفاده از چک‌لیستی که شامل اطلاعات دموگرافیک و سطح سرمی ویتامین D در دو گروه بود جمع‌آوری و با نرم‌افزار SPSS 16 تجزیه و تحلیل شد.
یافته‌ها: میانگین سنی گروه شاهد 78/4±91/67 سال و گروه مورد 63/3±91/68 سال بود (328/0p=). میانگین سطح سرمی 25 OH ویتامین Dگروه شاهد ng/ml 28/37 و گروه مورد ng/ml 06/23 بود که اختلاف مشاهده شده از نظر آماری معنی‌دار بود (003/0p=). 20 نفر (1/57%) از گروه شاهد و 10 نفر (6/%) از گروه مورد سطح کافی ویتامین D داشتند (01/0p=). نسبت شانس وقوع اختلال شناختی در افراد گروه مورد 3/3 برابر بیشتر از افراد گروه شاهد بود که این تفاوت نیز معنی‌دار بود (001/0p=).
نتیجه‏ گیری: افراد سالمند مبتلا به اختلال شناختی نسبت به افراد سالم سطح سرمی ویتامین D کمتری دارند که این کمبود ممکن است با اختلال شناختی آن‌ها ارتباط داشته باشد. بااین‌حال تأیید نتایج این مطالعه نیازمند مطالعات آتی با حجم نمونه بیشتری می‌باشد.
