Background: Few people have information about the process of stroke-induced ischemia.This study has aimed to investigate the relationship between the effects of Heracleum Persicum extract in reducing neurological deficit and the stroke sizes in the rat model of stroke.

Methods: In this study, 5 groups with 7 male Wistar rats were used. These groups were consisting of three groups received heracleum persicum extract at doses of 30, 50, 100 mg/Kg/body weight, orally by using gavage for 30 days, control group that was received distilled water and sham group which was not received treatment and ischemia induction. Two hours after treatment of the last dose; groups were evaluated for their neurological disorders and were under investigation of MACO surgery (Middle Artery Cerebral Occlusion) for measuring the stroke volume. Data were evaluated by using ANOVA test and neurological disorders were evaluated by using Mann Whitney test.

Results: The median of neurologic deficit score in doses of 50 and 100 decreased significantly (p<0.05). The total volume of stroke at doses of 50 and 100 compared to control had significant different. Moreover,t he percentage of the stroke volume in the penumbra region showed a significant decrease at 50 and 100 doses and had significant difference in compared with control group.

Conclusion: Reduction of the tissue damage and neurological deficits indicate the effects of ischemic tolerance phenomenon induced by treatment with Heracleum persicum extract. But Heracleum persicum extract’s protective effects need further researches.
